Picture of the Face of Christ from the Veil of Veronica. Cloth touched to a relic of the Veil of Veronica.*
In the year 1848, Freemasonic riots broke out in Rome, forcing Pope Pius IX to flee the city in fear of his life. In his exile, the pope ordered public prayers to be offered in all of the Churches of Rome to implore God’s mercy on the Papal Sates. He also ordered that the Veil of Veronica should be displayed to the public for three days. On the third day, January 6th, a miracle occurred. The Holy Face imprinted on the veil had become so distinct it looked alive, glowing with a soft light. The features took on a death-like hue, and the eyes wore an expression of great pain. Stunned, the canons rang the bells of the church, calling all of the people of the city to witness the miracle which lasted for three hours. On that same evening, detailed images were made of the miracle, touched to the Veil of Veronica, and sent to France and other places abroad for veneration and devotion. For the next 75 years, further copies were made of the veil in the same manner. This relic badge was touched to one of these images, made in 1876, and sealed by Pope Pius IX.
