  1. Deeply Grateful

Posted by Lawrence Martone on 3rd Nov 2017

The English publication of Union with God According to St. John of the Cross, by Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen, O.C.D., is a true gem. Having Fr. Gabriel's books originally written in Italian made available in English is true blessing for those committed to, or attracted to, Carmelite spirituality.
Fr. Gabriel's insights into St. John help the reader understand the saint's teaching on union with God in a way found nowhere else. It is just magnificent. I particularly enjoyed his reflection on "Jesus, Spouse of the Soul," which reminds us that we approach Jesus not only in His humanity but also in His divinity, for they are both part of the one Person of Christ, the Son of God. This makes the mystical spousal relationship of the divine Bridegroom with the individual soul much more accessible to our understanding and acceptance in many cases, particularly for men.
If more of Fr. Gabriel's books could be available in English, what a treasure that would be! We have the spiritual classic Divine Intimacy, the Little Catechism, The Way of Prayer, and now Union with God. There are at least six other books, and a booklet on St. Therese, waiting to be made available in English. What a gift if would be to the Church if that could happen soon.
