The Dogma of Purgatory is a consoling one. It is the place where good souls, undeserving of hell but not quite ready to see the face of God, are purified of the vices of temporal punishment due to sin that they still retained at the time of their death. Unable to merit, the souls in purgatory depend on our prayers to hasten their deliverance and entrance into Heaven: “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from their sins” 2 Machabees 12:46.
