Our Lady of Mount Carmel

It is no surprise then, that the Blessed Mother has always been at the heart of Carmelite spirituality and devotion; she is our guide and unswerving path to her Son.

It was she who appeared to St. Simon Stock, wearing the habit of the Order, to give the gift of the Brown Scapular to the Carmelite Order, and therefore to all Catholics who wish to wear it devoutly. When St. Peter Thomas, a 14th century Carmelite was praying for the survival and prosperity of the Order, he received this marvelous response: “Take courage, Peter, for the Carmelite order is to endure to the end of the world. For Elias, its founder, has already implored this favor of my Son.”

In the Carmelite Order, devotion to Our Lady began long before she was even born. After seeing a vision of a little cloud atop the mountain of Carmel, St. Elias recognized the prophecy of a Virgin bringing forth the savior. The Sons of the Prophet, men who followed Elias in his life of silence and prayer, built a chapel in her honor on Mount Carmel. It is a pious tradition that it was Our Blessed Mother herself, after the Ascension, who brought to the hermits living on the mountain (in St. Elias’ tradition) the news of the fulfillment of the promise of a Savior in Jesus Christ, her own Son, converting them to the Catholic Faith.

More can be read about this devotions in our past newsletters.

O Mary, flower of Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, who brought forth the Son of God, yet remained a Virgin, sweet and Immaculate Mother, grant the favors your children implore, O Star of the Sea! -St. Simon Stock
